Velin AI vs Parakeet AI: Native Desktop App or Browser Tab?

Parakeet AI and Velin AI both give you real-time answers during interviews. They're built on different foundations, and that decides almost everything else about them.

Parakeet is browser-first and mobile-optimised, with a desktop app alongside it, and it meters usage in credits. Velin is a native desktop app hidden at the operating system level, with unlimited usage on every plan.

Neither is automatically right. It depends on where you'll be sitting and how often you'll use it.

What Parakeet AI does that Velin can't

Give them this: the browser-first approach unlocks things a desktop app simply cannot do.

That last one matters more than it looks. If you interview twice a year, a credit balance that sits there waiting is a better deal than a subscription you forget to cancel. Parakeet's free tier is 10 sessions of up to 10 minutes each, and it's re-startable.

If you need to work on a locked-down machine you can't install software on, or you want help on a phone interview, Parakeet does something Velin doesn't. Velin is desktop-only and always will be — that's what OS-level invisibility requires.

The architecture difference

Parakeet claims "100% Undetectable," "Invisible on Screen Share," "Invisible in Dock" and "Invisible in Task Manager."

Read those carefully against a browser-first product. Dock and Task Manager invisibility describes their desktop app — a browser tab is a tab. It appears in your window list, it can be enumerated by a browser extension, and on a machine running proctoring software the browser is the most watched surface there is.

Velin's approach is the opposite end. It's a native app hidden below the layer capture software reads: absent from the dock, menu bar and Activity Monitor, running under the process name V Module, click-through, never the active window.

Feature Spotlight: Why native matters here

A proctoring extension lives in the browser and can see browser things — tabs, windows, focus changes. It can't see a native process that isn't advertising itself to the window server. That's the whole argument for the desktop-only tradeoff.

Credits versus unlimited

Parakeet runs on a credit system — roughly half a credit per 30-minute session, with subscription and lifetime options for unlimited use. Their published prices didn't load when we checked, so we're not going to quote a number we can't verify.

Velin has no credits on any plan. $34/month, $228/year or $324 once, all with unlimited usage and unlimited session length. There's no counter running while you're in an interview and no decision to make about whether this question is worth spending on.

One note on their numbers

Parakeet's homepage claims "1,534,135+ people" and "4.86 from 340,066+ reviews."

That's a review rate of roughly 22% of all users. For consumer software, a 2-3% review rate would be high. We're not calling it false — we have no way to audit it — but it's worth knowing that the number is doing a lot of work, and it's the kind of claim worth discounting when you're choosing between tools.

For what it's worth, Velin's own figures in this post come from its pricing config and product documentation rather than a marketing page, and where a number couldn't be sourced it's been left out.

Which to buy

Velin AI is the better buy if:

The honest framing: Parakeet trades depth of invisibility for reach — it goes where a desktop app can't. Velin trades reach for depth. Pick the one whose tradeoff matches the room you'll be in.
